2012 pruning

March 17, 2012

Things have been quiet on the orchard front due to lots of engineering.  But I fund a couple hours last week to prune the trees in the Five Islands orchard, collecting a bag of scionwood in the process for the Stroudwater wild apple orchard rehab.  I also tied a bunch of branches down with twine to help spread the trees out.  I’m trying to avoid staking any branches down, since it makes it really annoying to mow around them.  Instead, I tied the upper branches down to lower branches, which I trained in the last couple of years.  Some of the trees are looking pretty good at this point, while some are really floppy and lack a strong leader – it seems to depend a lot on the variety.
